What does payments network mean?

A payment network is actually the system which will facilitate a given transaction, when there is a card used by the purchaser. The payments network always mediates between the retailer and the purchaser, and if authorization is given by the purchaser the network will allow the transaction to take place. For example, online transactions take place with the help of electronic payment services which, in that sense, are payment networks facilitating these financial transactions among its users.
